For many small to medium sized business’, a public relations plan is an extra job with no guaranteed outcome. And if you’re sole trader, wearing ten different hats at any one time, do you really have time to add yet another facet to your work schedule? To hear how it can be done listen to what PR specialist, Anne Buttar from Wonderland Firm recommends in this podcast.
Why is PR a really good idea? Every business needs and relies on positive public perception to succeed. You want customers to appreciate your brand to build loyalty, and for this to happen your business needs a steady, visible presence in the market place: PR works for your business long term - stick with it! It’s the tool that leverages off all your other marketing and internal structures to lift your business image to a new dimension.
Anne emphasises that one of the best ways to achieve this is by using social media (what equates to the second largest country in the world? Think Facebook) but you must know how to do it well.
Other things I found fascinating from my talk with Anne:
- PR works in tandem with marketing; tack on a social media schedule and you’re good to go
- Positive media management = positive relationships and reputation
- Create your marketing plan “inhouse and drive it, because that’s your heart” (Anne Buttar)
- Using ‘everyday’ influencers (rather than those with massive following) as a springboard for SME’s can be truly effective, if they resonate with your ethos
- PR reaches the broadest audience possible and presents the all-important, relatable ‘human element’.
And when your business hits an obstacle such as negative customer feedback, Anne tells us how to hit it head on and create friendship out of angst.
“Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step in your life.”
